After years of consolidation in the advertising market in Great Falls, there’s a new deal with some attractive features. The Shop Hopper is a tabloid-style newspaper that uses direct mail to reach more than 30,000 homes in the Great Falls area. It is published by the Cooperative Advertising Group of Great Falls, formed last year by Mark Davis of Ben Franklin Stores, Jim Hallen of Ace Hardware and Mike Weir of Northwinds Publishing and Printing.
Perhaps the Shop Hopper’s most unique feature is its non-profit cooperative structure. If you join as an investor for just $500, you obtain a variety of benefits and discounts from local stores, businesses and TV Stations. You also obtain the right to vote on issues affecting the co-op. In fact, if there is a financial surplus at the end of the year you may get a cash dividend. Not many ad vehicles deliver that!
While of course open to all advertisers large and small, the niche the Shop Hopper is targeting contains locally owned stores and small businesses, including home-based businesses such as companies that make Made in Montana products. It is very cost effective compared to other mediums, especially since color is included in the price of any ad. Each edition that comes out boasts more ads than the one before and is producing results for its participants. Future plans include classifieds and a web site.
